Barbara Orland was born in Paxinos, Pennsylvania. Currently serving as Acting Co-Principal Oboe, Orland has served as Assistant Principal Oboe with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra since 1976. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she was a student of James Caldwell.
Orland was involved in graduate studies at Temple University, where she studied with Louis Rosenblatt, before accepting the position with the STL Symphony. Orland was also an active freelancer in the Philadelphia area. She has participated in the Tanglewood, Yale, and New College summer music festivals. Orland has been an active participant in the STL Symphony Education and Community Partnership Program since its inception, and has taught extensively throughout the area, with students at St. Louis and Washington universities as well as other schools. oboe recitals throughout the United States and Australia, and serves on the Executive Committee of the International Double Reed Society.
