Schubert "Great"

SCHUBERT "GREAT"

Presented by the Thomas A. Kooyumjian Family Foundation

Stanislaw Skrowaczewski, conductor
David Halen, violin

WEBER Oberon Overture
MENDELSSOHN Violin Concerto
SCHUBERT Symphony No. 9, "The Great"

Schubert’s Ninth Symphony, “The Great,” cemented his role as Beethoven’s successor.  In the words of musicologist Maynard Solomon, “The Great” contains a “resolute, irresistible motion toward an exalted goal.”  Similarly, the last large orchestral work that Mendelssohn wrote, his Violin Concerto, is considered one of the most perfectly crafted violin concertos of all time.  Every concert violinist seeks to master it, and the STL Symphony’s Concertmaster, David Halen is looking forward to performing it once again.
