Parties of Note

From casual to elegant, intimate to grand, Parties of Note gives you a chance to gather in some of St. Louis’ greatest homes and exclusive venues to enjoy a variety of themed parties throughout the year. All parties are donated by the hosts, and 100% of the proceeds benefit the STL Symphony.

PARTY #2: THE FAMILY THAT PLAYS TOGETHER…

What is it like to grow up in a family where everyone is musical? STL Symphony members Catherine Lehr, cello; and Manuel Ramos, violin; perform with their adult children and share their experiences raising musical kids. This special event will be held at a lovely Clayton penthouse filled with contemporary art. Enjoy views of the city along with hors d’oeuvres, wine and soda.

PARTY #5: THE SCULPTOR AND HER ART

At Sandy Kaplan’s charming home in Richmond Heights, large and dramatic terra cotta figures dance and romance, turning each room into a colorful gallery. The artist has been studying clay sculpture at Craft Alliance since 1989. Enjoy a summer lunch while she discusses the creation of her artwork and its evolution over the past 22 years.

Play with the pros at the Frontenac Racquet Club at this fun and instructional party, including a brunch with Bloody Marys and mimosas. Four courts will be available for doubles, with one pro per court. Guests will play round-robin doubles for one and a half hours, with each player having an opportunity to partner with a pro. Guests will also view a doubles exhibition by the tennis pros. Please notify the tennis club if you have a USTA ranking.

The fabulous living room, with high ceilings and wood beams, has near perfect acoustics for this exceptional event. The hour-long performance features Scott Andrews, principal clarinet; Melissa Brooks, associate principal cello; and Nina Ferrigno, piano. Wine and other beverages and delicious gourmet desserts will be served.

PARTY #22: CHAMBER MUSIC JAMBOREE

Rosin up your bow—here’s your chance to jam with professional musicians from the STL Symphony! Bring your own instrument and your favorite piece of chamber music to play along with Rebecca Boyer Hall, violin; Asako Kuboki, violin; , viola; and Alvin McCall, cello. A piano will be available as well. The setting is a lovely Clayton home, where appetizers, wine, beer, and soda will be served. If you don’t play an instrument, feel free to join us as part of the audience for several hours of wonderful music.

PARTY #23: A VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE

Trumpeter extraordinaire Susan Slaughter, who retired in 2010 after a 40-year career with the STL Symphony, provides the musical entertainment for this special event hosted by SVA past presidents. Slaughter was the first female appointed principal trumpet at a major symphony orchestra, and in 1975, the Symphony Women’s Association endowed Susan’s chair. She also founded the International Women’s Brass Conference, has made numerous recordings and holds prestigious teaching positions. This evening takes place in an architecturally stunning home with wonderful acoustics, nestled in a serene setting in West County. A buffet dinner and wine will be served.

PARTY #24: DECK THE HALLS

Over the past 54 years of their marriage, Joan and Ken Fiala have amassed a priceless and stunning collection of holiday decorations. At Christmas, their home becomes a wonderland, filled with dozens of trees and thousands of ornaments. You’ll have two opportunities to enjoy a tour of this extensive collection throughout their beautiful Clayton home. After all the “oohs” and “aahs,” sit down for a full English tea with sandwiches, scones and sweets prepared by Joan.

PARTY #26: NOTES FROM BACH

An inspirational event focused on the music of Johann Sebastian Bach begins with a performance led by the American Kantorei in the seminary chapel at Concordia Seminary. The festively decorated Koburg Hall will be the site of a social gathering with hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Guests will then be treated to a performance featuring Celeste Golden Boyer, Second Associate Concertmaster, in a performance of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, followed by a sit-down dinner and dessert. Concordia’s copy of J.S. Bach’s Bible will be on display, and brief presentations will be given throughout the evening.

Children six years old and over—parents and grandparents, too—are invited to a delightful holiday tea at the Old Warson Country Club. Hot cocoa, tea, sandwiches, as well as wine and dessert will be served in this festive setting. Children will enjoy decorating holiday cookies.

PARTY #28: THE ART OF FLORAL DESIGN

The elegant Saint Louis Woman’s Club is a perfect setting for lunch and floral design demonstration. Linda Levy Katz, owner of The Fine Art of Floral Design, has been designing floral arrangements for the past 25 years. She’ll share some of her tips for making a beautiful, long-lasting display. The Saint Louis Woman’s Club is located in a beautiful 19th century house in the heart of the Central West End’s National Historic District.

PARTY #29: HARMONIUS HARPSICHORDS

Join us for an unusual opportunity to experience the beauty of Dr. Charles Metz’s collection of harpsichords. View a rare original 1590 Virginal by Francesco Poggi, a replica of a 1650 Couchet housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and replica of a 1760 French harpsichord found in the Smithsonian. A renowned musicologist and harpsichordist, Dr. Metz designed his spacious home in the Edison Building for displaying and playing his instruments. You’ll enjoy wine, hors d’oeuvres and desserts, along with a fascinating discussion and performance.

REFUND POLICY

Paid reservations to a Parties of Note event are non-refundable.

Should a host find it necessary to cancel a Parties of Note event, the Symphony Volunteer Association will refund the cost of the party in full. The purchaser may request a 100% tax deduction for the cost of the party in lieu of a refund.
